I recently had a sweet baby boy. The whole experience of childbirth is a whirlwind. It’s single-handedly the most amazing experience I’ve ever had and the thought that my body was able to make and grow another human is completely mind blowing to me. It’s also incredibly exhausting with a whole spectrum of emotions while your body goes through extreme changes. One thing that I find particularly interesting about society and pregnancy/child birth is how depression is actually accepted and actively looked after and cared for. It seems to be the only time where people actually accept this as the norm and doesn’t surround itself with stigma that the everyday life does. I feel fortunate for the number of people that reached out to me post-birth to check in to see how I was doing- mainly how I was mentally feeling. It got me thinking, why can’t it always be like this - where mental health is a discussion point in conversations with your doctors, friends and colleagues? My hope with OOTify is that it can be like this. I hope we can all understand that life is tough and different experiences will make us feel certain ways and it’s ok. We all need to support and accept each other and what we are going through on a daily basis, not just during major life events. I am happy with where we've come as a society with mental health and childbirth. I hope we can continue the conversation to extend beyond child birth and that mental wellness SHOULD be the norm in our conversations.
